SEO for Dentists in India: Rules First

When a dentist asks me about SEO, the first question is usually “how do I get to number one on Google?” I would rather start somewhere else: what is your clinic allowed to say, and where will it say it? A dental website that ranks well but breaks advertising rules is a liability, not an asset. So this guide puts the rules first and the tactics second.

Why rules come before rankings

Indian doctors and dentists work under the NMC’s professional conduct and advertising norms, and dental practitioners also answer to the Dental Council of India and their state dental councils. Separately, the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954 restricts certain claims, and ASCI’s code covers misleading advertising generally. You should confirm the current position for your own registration with your council or a lawyer. This article is general information, not legal advice.

In practice, the pages most likely to cause trouble are the ones SEO people love: service pages with strong promises. Avoid guarantees, superlatives such as “best dentist in the city”, claims you cannot verify, patient testimonials, and before-and-after claims. Good SEO does not need any of them.

Start with how patients actually search

Patients type problems and places: “tooth pain at night near me”, “root canal cost Kolkata”, “dental implant consultation”. Make a simple list of 20 to 30 such phrases from your own reception desk, from the questions patients ask on the phone, and from Google’s autocomplete. This list is more useful than any tool export, because it reflects your real patients.

Then group the phrases by treatment and by locality. Each treatment you actually provide gets its own page. Each page should explain the procedure in plain language, who it may suit, what the visit involves, and when to see a dentist urgently.

Write service pages that are informative, not promotional

A compliant page reads like a patient information leaflet. Describe the procedure, mention that suitability depends on examination, and say that results and recovery differ between people. Name the dentist, the qualifications as registered, and the registration number where your council expects it. Leave out phrases like “painless”, “100% success” or “latest technology that guarantees” anything.

Fees need care. If you publish a price range, say what it includes and that the final cost depends on the clinical assessment. Some state clinical establishment rules also ask clinics to display rates, so check the rules that apply where you practise.

Fix the local basics

For most clinics, local search matters more than national keywords. Three things carry most of the weight: a complete Google Business Profile, a name, address and phone number that match everywhere, and a website that loads fast on a phone. Use one phone number across the site and your profile. Ours at CENITPRO is 8100550550, and every client should likewise pick one number and keep it identical on every listing.

Reviews are worth a separate word. Ask patients for feedback in a neutral way, never offer anything in return, and do not repost reviews on your site as testimonials or use them in ads. Reply to reviews without disclosing anything about a patient’s treatment.

Keep a simple content rhythm

Once a month, publish one answer to a real patient question: what to expect after an extraction, how to look after a child’s first tooth, when a toothache needs urgent care. Keep it factual and cite a recognised source where you quote a figure. This builds trust and gives Google more to understand about your clinic without a single promise.

A short compliance check before you publish

Read each page once as a regulator would. Is there a guarantee, a superlative, a patient story, a before-and-after image, or a claim you cannot prove? If yes, remove it. Is the dentist’s identity and registration clear? Is the contact information correct? If so, publish.
