IndiaAI and ICMR sign an agreement to share health datasets and computing for medical AI

IndiaAI and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) signed an MoU to speed up responsible, scalable use of AI in healthcare, according to a Drishti IAS report dated 11 May 2026 (Drishti IAS).

  • ICMR will contribute anonymised datasets, AI models and toolkits developed under its MIDAS framework to the AIKosh platform, so researchers, startups and innovators get wider access.
  • IndiaAI will provide GPU-based computing infrastructure to ICMR at subsidised rates.
  • The report says IndiaAI and ICMR’s NIRDHDS were recognised in 2025 as Pioneer Countries under the HealthAI Global Regulatory Network, and a later three-party MoU with HealthAI covers responsible AI governance in healthcare.

What this means for your clinic

This is infrastructure news rather than a product you can use today, but it points to more Indian-trained medical AI tools reaching clinics over the next few years. When vendors pitch AI tools, ask what data they were trained on and whether they are validated for Indian patients. Also keep in mind that India is building rules for responsible AI in healthcare, so using AI in patient communication or marketing carries more scrutiny than before (see our NMC advertising rules brief).
