Delhi HC Gives NMC Two Weeks to Report on Doctors’ Qualifications in Fortis Case

The Delhi High Court has told the National Medical Commission and Delhi’s Directorate General of Health Services to file a joint report within two weeks on the qualifications of two doctors in the long-running Fortis Shalimar Bagh negligence case. If they miss the deadline, the officers concerned must appear in person. The matter is listed again on 16 December.

The case began in 2017, when a newborn suffered brain injury in the hospital’s neonatal unit. It has since turned into a dispute over credentials. The Delhi Medical Council had already told the two doctors to stop calling themselves neonatologists or super-specialists, because their registered qualifications did not support those titles.

What it means for clinics and hospitals: the titles on your website, Google profile and signboards are now legal statements, not branding. Under the NMC’s October 2026 advertising guidelines, every doctor profile must show name, qualifications and registration details, and a title like “specialist” or “super-specialist” must match a qualification registered with the State Medical Council. If a profile says more than the registration supports, fix it now.
